As some of you may or may not know I have a special needs daughter with moderate delays and everyday is a learning process for me and my husband to find the right tools that work for my daughter. Every child is different and unique and every child with special needs is equally as unique but with that uniqueness comes time of frustrations and challenges. Part of my daughters therapy is to develop her social skills with her peers. As of today, she does not play or talk to others in her preschool class and she has a tendency to smother adults with affection. This has always been a challenge for us because we do not want to hurt her feelings or retard any emotional growth by expressing that sometimes there is a such thing as too much kisses, too much hugs, and too much one on one time. As I type this now, she is attached to my arm and gently rubbing and kissing my upper shoulder! With most special needs children they do not grasp the concept of right or wrong and because they aren't as verbally expressive as children who are on target for their age they don't always understand or feel comfortable with their feelings. My daughter, for instance, there is not gray areas- she is either super happy and everything is great or she is on the floor crying, screaming, and having a 30 minute tantrum as to why she isn't allowed to have cookies for breakfast! Due to my frustration and the lack of progress I was seeing with other therapies I began doing my own research and that is when I came across the Toy with Feelings!!
Kimochi means emotion in Japanese and that is the purpose of these toys! You don't have to have a special needs child to know that children are not comfortable and rarely understand why they feel the way they do! Children can tell you if they feel bad of if they are hurt or if they are happy but what they don't realize is you don't need to feel happy everyday and it's okay when you feel bad or feel angry or upset. Kimochis teach our children how to own their emotions! That each emotion whether it is good or bad is a part of them and how we react to these emotions will determine our future emotions! To be honest this toy was just as much of a learning lesson for me as it was for my daughter!
I received the Kimochis cat to review with my daughter. She is a huge cat fan so this made her day! Cat has four friends that are equally as adorable that you can purchase including Cloud, Huggtopus, Bugs, and Lovey! Each Kimochis has their very own personality and their very own bag of emotions that they are trying to work out. Since we reviewed Cat I will focus on her (for some reason my daughter claims Cat is a She so I am going with that). Cat can be a little bossy which can cause "cat fights"- similar to my daughter! Cat doesn't always know how to build relationship with other kids because she likes things her way and doesn't always like to conform to other children's way of playing. Cat comes with everything you see above. Each Kimochis come with feelings that you can put inside the pocket and it opens up lines of communication with your children on how to handle when these emotions occur. My daughter and I dorole playing where sometimes I pretend to cause the emotion or I feel the emotion and we try to find ways of making each other feel better and to make our end goal to be HAPPY!!!
I honestly can't brag enough about how much Cat has helped my daughter open up about her. We are still working slowly with her and currently working on bringing this therapy into her sessions at school. My older daughter has also began playing with us and has learned to recognize her emotions before she acts on them- which has made me a very proud mom! You can purchase your very own Kimochis from their on-line store or from other on-line stores like Amazon!
